How to plan your bedroom

• Size the bed to the room. A queen bed (60 by 80 inches) fits well in a room of about 10 by 10 feet or more. A king (76 by 80 inches) is more comfortable in 12 by 12 feet or larger.
• Leave clearance. Keep about 24 to 30 inches on each side of the bed and roughly 36 inches in front of a dresser so the drawers open fully.
• Check upstairs access. Many older Massachusetts homes have tight, turning staircases. Measure the stairway and the bedroom door before choosing a large headboard or a tall chest.

Buying a full set keeps finishes matched. Mixing pieces also works: keep one wood tone or one metal finish across the room. Pair your new bed with a mattress you have tested in person.
