How to plan the room

• Start with the wall. Measure the longest wall and pick your main seat first. A sofa usually looks right at about two thirds of the wall length.
• Leave walkways. Plan 30 to 36 inches for main paths and 16 to 18 inches between the sofa and the coffee table.
• Check the way in. Many Massachusetts triple-deckers and older Capes have narrow stairs and 30 inch doorways. Measure doors, hallways and turns before you order.

A good layout mixes one anchor piece, one or two chairs and surfaces within reach of every seat. Families with kids or pets often go with performance fabric; leather wipes clean and handles dry winter air well when kept away from baseboard heat.
